The Stigmatist is a novel of religious mysticism and international intrigue. At the outset, American pilgrims at an apparition site in Spain are caught up in frightening visions of how they stand with God-a warning calling them to amend their ways. Fr. Anthony Santorelli, an American priest sent by the Vatican to investigate, returns with a message for the Pope which foreshadows the spread of the "warning" visions, and a series of dire events. To authenticate his role as a messenger and prophet, the priest is mystically marked with bloody stigmata in his hands, feet and side, replicating the five wounds of Christ on the Cross. Fr. Santorelli persuades the Pope to endorse the visions as sent by God to provide a time of grace for repentance, and they spread inexorably from country to country, among Christians and Jews. The Pope's approval of the warning visions provokes European Union bureaucrats, who have long resented the Holy See's resistance to their secular agenda, and its efforts to preserve the "Christian identity" of Europe. They turn the force of EU sanctions against the tiny nation-state. High level clerics in the Vatican who have been disturbed by the visions seize on the EU's action as an excuse to attempt to remove the Pope. (The novel, published in 2010, includes an account of Vatican infighting and an international conspiracy of Cardinals to oust Pope Benedict XVI, and foretells an untimely end to his papacy. Life imitated the novel's art on March 5, 2013, in the incident headlined "Cardinal imposter caught sneaking into Vatican enclave.") And deadly opposition comes from the head of Iran's Revolutionary Guards, who regards the Roman Catholic Church as the main opponent of the spread of Islam over the centuries. He persuades himself that the Church is responsible for sending the visions and that the Vatican must be destroyed before it can generate visions that proselytize Muslims. One terrorist plot leads to another, and conflicts spin out of control in a number of countries. The Stigmatist is the story of Fr. Santorelli's very human struggle to accept and fulfill his painful mystical calling while he is being drawn by God into Vatican plots, international intrigues, terrorist acts, and nuclear war.

Anthony Santorelli is the action hero at the center of this novel. He would seem an unlikely pick. He is an American priest exiled to the post of prison chaplain for displeasing his Archbishop. Yet, he is called to Rome by a former professor to investigate a report of frightenting visions seen by a pilgrim group visiting Garabandal,Spain. According to 20th century prophecy, these visions may signal the end of the age we live in. Another author might have been content with recounting the string of visions by the group and the history of the prophecy, but Mr. Baruch has not written about a series of small vignettes. Instead he has chosen to depict the effects of the visions as they spread on a macro scale through out the world to people of all faiths.
If you liked Michael O'Brien's novel about Fr. Elijah, you should enjoy this spiritual thriller as well. Fr. Santorelli has his own mystical experience at Garabandal. He is sent to investigate the events, but he returns to Rome with a cryptic message for the Pope of impending dire events and a bloody stigmata in his hands, feet and side to validate his role as a messenegr and prophet. When the Pope decides to welcome the visions as ushering in a time of grace for repentance, the European Union bureaucrats seek a concerted action against the Vatican to force it to back down and high ranking clerics fear that the Pope is leading the Church astray. The Pope soon comes under attack from within the church.
An even graver menace operates as a backdrop to these mystical events. Radical groups within Iran fear that the Vatican is somehow propogating the visions and that they may turn them toward proselytizing Muslims. Soon, European countries, Israel, Russia and the United States are all drawn in to the intrigues which threaten the world with nuclear destruction.
Mr. Baruch shows a deep understanding of geopolitical realities and his depiction of the motives and reasoning of the leadres of the disparate forces is very credible. Action on the international stage proceeds while Fr. Santorelli is engaged in an internal spiritual battle over the unwanted stigmata and presentiments of the future. Although there are passages that read like an international action thriller, spiritual realities remain crucial to the story line. After you have read the first 100 pages, you will be drawn in to the suspense of the story and continue to read to finish the book. The ending is very shocking, ingenious and spiritually moving. The book also made me want to learn more about the prophecy of Garabandal.

Mr. Baruch has written a compelling religious thriller that gets your attention in every chapter! You are IN the plot immediately, eager to discover the ending. Enjoy this book, I as did! - John
I found this novel thought provoking and enjoyable. As a Christian I often think that Our Lord's second coming is imminent. And although He said it would come as "a thief in the night" it is not unreasonable to think that some signs will precede that event. This book gives a scenario of how a universal call to repentence might occur as a result of Marion apparitions that are still being investigated by the Church.
I enjoyed the story and for one who believes there will be a judgment found the premise interesting and credible.
From the first page I put the book down only by necessity, like making dinner or getting some sleep. I simply put all aside for 2 and a half days so I could find out how things would be resolved. It frightened and disturbed me because I thought there was much truth and some of the events tore my heart, but I am glad I read it and have suggested it to several others.
Mr. Baruch's style of writing allows the reader to perceive the exact situation. Yet he never stalls the movement of events. His understanding of global political situations allows him to masterfully twist his tale. The reader is never sure of what the next page will contain for his characters. Only after completing the final page does one know the outcome. I hope he will continue to write. ginnie
My wife just loved this book and has read it three times so far.
