Beautiful Italian doctor Magdalena Russo is headed to a medical conference when the ship she’s traveling on is seized at the Panama Canal. World War II is raging, and the passengers aboard the Italian ship are deemed a threat to the United States. Magdalena and the other passengers are sent to Ellis Island where they are interrogated and detained. During her forced stay in America, she lends a hand with medical services and embarks on an unlikely friendship with hansom ship's captain. Will the prisoners make it home to Italy before the friendship becomes something more?

Award-winning author Carl Veno’s three-dimensional and vibrant characters take readers on an emotional roller coaster ride through a unique time in our country’s history.

Pilgrims of War has also been adapted to a screenplay.

The book shines a light on a little known fact in American history: During the Second World War after paranoia had sparked fears that US citizens were aiding various enemies, the American government detained hundreds of thousands of Japanese, German and Italian descendants many of which had lived in the country peacefully for years. Taken away from their homes, these people were forced to live in old military bases hastily converted into overcrowded prison camps.

Their story is told through the eyes of Doctor Magdalena Russo, an Italian doctor on her way to Panama for a medical conference, after the ship she is on is seized by the American Navy. The passengers are subsequently transported to Ellis Island as prisoners of War. Magdalena must adjust to life in a prison camp and cope with the uncertainty of not knowing when she will again see her family who struggle for survival in war torn Italy.

I found the book very interesting and historically well researched. The author cleverly interweaves a lot of factual information about government policies and events of the time into the story. However at times the focus of the book favors the rendering of historical facts at the cost of the love story it is supposed to be.

Overall this is an interesting story that flows well. It sheds a light on a time in history that deserves more attention, perhaps to ensure it doesn’t happen again. I recommend this book to fans of historical fiction or anyone who is interested in this period in history.

Pilgrims of War A Love Story edition by Carl A Veno Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Carl A. Vino’s “Pilgrims of War A Love Story” is a masterfully crafted piece of historical fiction. In a genre flooded with WWII era stories, “Pilgrims” delves into the dark history of the United States internment camps. While the Americans are fighting the Nazi terrors in Europe, the government is rounding up citizens of foreign descent, depriving them of their liberty and imprisoning them in internment camps and detainment centers - the most ironic of which, located on Ellis Island.

It is during this backdrop that Vino introduces us to Dr. Magdalena Russo, an Italian doctor, is on her way to a medical conference in Brazil when her life changed dramatically. The vessel is boarded while in Atlantic waters by the U.S. Navy. Under the American Espionage Act, Dr. Russo and the other passengers are informed they will be detained, suspected of potential espionage against the United States government. The passengers are transported to Ellis Island.

Dr. Russo corresponds with her husband, Raphael, an Italian professor and her teenage daughter Andrea about her experience in the U.S. As she eventually gains the trust of the guards, Magdalena is allowed to practice medicine and to receive information from her family. In Italy, the political situation shifts and Raphael becomes a threat to the government and is arrested. Andrea falls in love with a German soldier and is exposed to the Nazi Aryan purity dogma.

Magdalena is deeply grieved by the turn of events facing her family in Europe; but her own situation changes when she is transferred to Fort Missoula in Missouri. There she continues her work as a doctor, impartially tending to the wounded until she is able to return to Europe as part of a prisoner exchange program on a personal mission to reunite with her family.

Dr. Russo is a principled and strong family woman. Italian Captain Francis Mazini is immediately drawn to her. Dr. Russo’s love for her family and loyalty to her husband keeps her faithful despite feelings of loneliness and attraction. She is a highly engaging and well-developed heroine. She is easily admired for her principles, integrity and devotion.

Vino does a stellar job of bringing this part of history to life. His own personal military experience and his journalistic style blend together beautifully to make this story leap from the pages.
WWII history retold using how it affected the lives of various people.
Dr. Magdalena Russo is an Italian surgeon on her way to a medical convention in Panama when the ship she is traveling on is intercepted by the American Navy. It’s a very scary time for her; she’s not allowed to contact her family except by censored letters. Finally she learns that everyone will be sent to prison at Ellis Island. Through her eyes and letters from her husband and daughter, we see the shameful treatment of innocent people, all due to fear that they might be helping the enemy. As a doctor, she’s allowed to help a woman give birth, but it’s too late. The doctor in charge waited too long to get help and the woman bleeds to death. Dr. Russo is devastated; she feels the woman’s death was unnecessary and the doctor should be blamed, but nothing is done. It’s business as usual. Just a side effect of war.
Mostly told in the author's voice, I found it hard to follow the complicated politics described.
The one thing I learned from this book was that Italian immigrants were held in American detention camps! I am the child of an immigrant Italian who fought for us in World War 2. Our family was never sent to such camps. Makes me think even less of my country interning Italians, Germans, Japanese.
The book as a whole however, was simplistic, told in matter of fact style. I saw no figurative language where I read a sentence that is written so unusually, I pause and enjoy it again. Though this was told in the main character's voice, the author did not make me care about her....the writing is impersonal. I feel he doesn't' understand the ART of writing fiction that takes a reader's breathe away. The story follows Magdalena's detention moves in America until she can find her husband and daughter. I felt no horror or SUSPENSE and did not feel the characters were developed. Aside from learning about detained Italians, I wasted time reading this and had to speed read to finish it because I wanted to get to the end quickly. (I taught writing and literature in my career so I probably expect more.)
