Interesting for me as I had ancestors on the 1845 wagon train that used the Barlow Trail over Oregon's Cascade Mountains. I did question some of the details in this book as they disagreed with many of the accounts I have read previously (from diaries) and seemed to be based more on the authors assumptions than fact. But, I'm probably not the typical reader on this topic! It still was an interesting, well-written and worthwhile read!

A Heart for Any Fate Westward to Oregon 1845 Linda Crew 9780875952994 Books Reviews

At first glance, the target audience for "A Heart for Any Fate" would seem to be teenage girls. After reading it, I have to say it should appeal to a much wider audience. The writing is excellent and compelling.
A disclosure is necessary I am a descendent of both the King and Fuller families, and have been studying these families for several years. The way in which the author, Linda Crew, puts flesh on the bare historical facts without altering the facts is exceptional.
At the same time, I found myself reacting on a personal level to many of the events
I highly recommend this book.
The book was easy to read and gave a pretty good picture of what it was like to travel the Oregon trail. I was especially interested because, even though it is fiction, it was based on my ancestor's trip.
i had to read this for class in 8th grade it was not that bad to read.
A bit slow at the start, but comes to life as the Oregon bound wagon train rolls into the real challenges that awaited them between Missouri and the Willamette Valley. Well documented, highly readable by all ages.
I didn't think I would enjoy this book as much as I had enjoyed Ms. Crew's other books but I was very surprised. This book really enlightened me about the life on the Oregon Trail, or any Pioneer Trek, for that matter. Ms. Crew has done a a very careful job of researching her subject and imagining the fictional aspects of the real life people who inhabit the pages of A Heart For Any Fate. I was in love with the King family, their dreams, their courage, their heartbreaking experiences on the Oregon Trail. I read the book and when I was finished I read it again because it was that good! The second read was even more enjoyable. Ms. Crew does a very good job of charting the growth of Lovisa King from young girl to woman during the course of her months on the trail and the sacrifices she made. While there was a lot of imagination involved in writing this account, the story convinced me that it was all possible. A very accurate and entertaining book.
As a King Family descendant, I found this narrative especially interesting as a glimpse into what trail life might have been like in 1845. Recognizing the names of people and places, even in a fictionalized account, is fun. And the author does a good job of weaving known people and events into a very plausible story line that brings to life what these people experienced and may have felt.
This book is informative, as far as the way things were at that time. It would be a great book for schools to read in history class. I have never been one to like studying history, but this story is so well written that I couldn't put it down. The characters were so realistic that I feel like I know them personally. It had a great storyline, and I was sad when the book was over. I wish there was a sequel. This is a story that teens to older adults would love. It is a book that you will remember forever. I recommend it to everyone.
