This story pulled me in from the very beginning. Liz Carlyle has another truly touching tale of love, including a great twist at the end, which, I had suspected something similar, but to find out it went even further than that - oh my! Brilliant characters, and I LOVED that she was a virgin, instead of what you'd expected during the first couple chapters, what with her past and all. Carlyle never actually says straight out that she's innocent. So you believe she might have had an encounter.Of course the one thing that Carlyle does, something that some authors do which is a bit annoying, is going on and on and on for pages about one thought, or one little event. Usually that requires a few paragraphs, maybe a page and a half, but not five. Regardless, the story is so passionate and emotional, you cannot read this book without feeling sympathy for all of the characters. They each have their own inner struggles that they must overcome, and when Carlyle goes deep into their minds, you understand them all the better and feel for them.

The long simmering resentment underlined the complex and passionate history between the couple in this book- Cam and Helene. I enjoyed the book very much. The character of Cam's daughter and her story was brilliant done and complimented the couple.
As a fan of Liz Carlyle already, it was surprising to find that this was one of her very best stories. A beautiful love story that spanned over 16 years with fascinating character development. Not just another historical romance but deeply inspriring on an emotional and intellectual level.
Although it started slowly, this is a great, entertaining story. Moreover, it's really well-written. Liz Carlyle is one of the best contemporary writers in her genre. Fans of "childhood sweetheart" stories will definitely class this as one of the best of its type.
I just love the rutledge family. The book the story are great. I didn't even particulary like Lord Treyhernne but loved the story and by the end well I was glad I read the book and he proved himself worthy in my mind. Without this book the rest of the rutledge family story would not make as much sense so I am glad I read it.
Loved this book. Not your traditional romantic male character. He is conflicted, rough around the edges, appealing and, at times, humorous. Sometimes he seemed like a bull in a china shop, but that just made him more endearing to this reader as he struggled to live up to his family responsibilities, yet seek his own happiness.
This is actually the second time i have read this. It still wrings strong, protective feelings towards the characters - that's how much a good writer Ms Carlyle is. Storyline sounds plausible, the issues, realistic. And the amount of intrigue abound such "quiet" area.
This is my first time reading this lady's books. I'm glad I found her. It was a very enjoyable story and the fact that there is the promise of more stories on the family is a plus. There was loads of intrigue, mayhem and old fashioned romance. I like the way the author filled in the background so you knew where the story was coming from. I found the characters believable, always a plus! I'm looking forward to getting my teeth into more of her books.
