Fate works via mysterious coincidences. I first heard of Ann-Marie MacDonald when I saw her video interview at Alex Colville's retrospective in Toronto's AGO. I fell (platonically, but passionately) in love from the first sight. She is a marvelous actress and her "The animals are not innocent. They have their own mysterious agenda." performance was so much more convincing because it reflected my own feelings about Colville's representation of dogs and crows. I immediately got on the and ordered two of her books and this play. I did right!
The heroine, a mousy, besotted, failure-prone assistant-prof of English lit trying to get her PhD by decyphering an obscure Elizabethan MS, which (she believes!) will prove Shakespeare "borrowed" two comedies and turned them into tragedies, thereby producing Otello and Romeo and Juliet. She also believes this feat will bring her fame, fortune, tenure, and the heart of her Prof. When Prof's loves labors prove to be lost where she is concerned, she's desperate. On the verge of a major breakdown, perhaps suicide, occult powers intervene and she miraculously finds herself in Otello and in Romeo and Juliet-befriending Desdemona, despising Iago, avoiding Tybalt, placating both Romeo and Mercutio, being romantically pursued by both Romeo and Juliet, etc., etc. This a real Shakespearean sitcom of errors, rolling along at break-neck speed.
The pros The literary intelligence and erudition of Ann-Marie MacDonald shines throughout. She juggles Shakespeare's lines, adapts them to her own delightful and hilarious purposes and interspaces them with her own writing, some contemporary but some pseudo-Elizabethan. She can imitate the Bard's prose and white verse pretty well and when she is lax, I suspect she stoops down to our own ignorance in order to be ingtelligible She's witty, wise, ironic, wry...all you might want from a comedy.
The cons Same as above- she's a mite too clever for her own good. So the play sparkles, but the splashing stream is mostly shallow and lacks what the Bard could supply so well, the beatiful and painful insight into man's (but also so much woman's) folly and existential despair. It's brilliant, but not profound enough. Alas (A lass?) But also high class, so the five stars. Falling short of Shakespeare, or even Durenmatt, aint so bad. Buy, read, and go to the theater when it plays again. Bravo Ms. MacDonald.
The one book I received has a white cover page and the pages aren't exactly the same as the book shown in the picture, I orderd it hoping it would be the same as the one in the picture because I have an essay to write with a study guide for the book for my Eng.1A class, and the page numbers don't match up with the book shown in the picture.
This is a fun little play, sending up academia while still respecting Shakespeare even if there are some changes that occur.
Purchased for a college class. Very well written. This is one of those "fourth wall" chick lit books that is surprisingly good.
